7) Tottenham Hotspur – €210.6m

Spurs have outspent City, which will surprise some observers, but their squad needed to be strengthened after finishing 17th in the Premier League last season.

The most high-profile addition is RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, who looked set to join Chelsea before their London rivals swooped in late in the window.

6) Nottingham Forest – €236.9m

Forest have had another crazy summer where they have brought in 13 players. It remains to be seen where they will all fit in.

Three wingers – Omari Hutchinson, Dan Ndoye and Dilane Bakwa – have been signed for £104m, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

5) Manchester United – €250.7m

The Red Devils have spent big to plug some holes in their squad, but many feel that they are still short of one or two players.

Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko should add goals, but prospective new no.1 Senne Lammens is an unknown quantity.

4) Newcastle United – €288.85m

Most of the Magpies’ summer spending came in a mad dash at the end of the window when they realised that they could not keep hold of Alexander Isak.

£124m was shelled out on Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade and Brentford’s Yoane Wissa. The likes of Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw and Aaron Ramsdale have also been recruited to bulk up the squad for Champions League football.
