FIVE Highest Scoring Goalkeepers In The History Of Football

The vast majority of goalkeepers are lucky to get even one goal during their playing careers but there are a few out there who went against the grain.

For whatever reason, certain shot-stoppers have also been blessed with the ability to be excellent penalty and free-kick takers. It has allowed them to rack up the goals at club or (occasionally) at international level.

All five keepers on our list come from South or Central America so it seems to be part of the culture in that part of the world.

Press the next page as we name the five highest scoring goalkeepers in football history.

5) Rene Higuita – 43

The Colombian was most famous for his scorpion kick during an international friendly against England back in 1995 but he was also a regular scorer at club level.

As we have already mentioned, these keepers specialised in set-piece goals. Despite all of his eccentricities, Higuita had excellent technique when scoring from free kicks and penalties.

4) Johnny Vegas Fernandez – 46

For those living in the UK, don’t get this Peruvian shot-stopper mixed up with the stand-up comedian! He spent his entire career in his homeland, playing for fifteen separate clubs.

Fernandez was capped at international level, but only on three occasions. The vast majority of his senior goals came from penalties.

3) Jorge Campos – 46

The Mexican is the notable exception on this list. The keeper was deployed as a striker, racking up 21 goals during the 1989/90 season for U.N.A.M.

Campos did move back between the sticks for the rest of his career, although there were occasions where teams substituted in a reserve goalkeeper during games so he could play up front.

2) Jose Luis Chilavert – 67

The former Zaragoza and Strasbourg keeper holds the distinction of being the only professional goalkeeper to score a hat-trick during Velez Sarsfield’s 6-1 win over Ferro Carril Oeste.

Chilavert also holds the record for the most goals by a goalkeeper at international level, having scored eight in 74 appearances for Paraguay across fourteen years.

1) Rogerio Ceni – 131

The Brazilian holds plenty of scoring records when it comes to keepers. He is the only one to score a century of senior goals and he also bagged five braces in his extraordinary career.

Ceni did slot away plenty of penalties but he was very much a free-kick specialist, with 61 goals coming from set pieces.
