Four Left Backs City Could Target Before The Transfer Window Shuts

Reports suggest that Manchester City are very interested in signing a new left-back before deadline day. The poor performances of Benjamin Mendy mean that manager Pep Guardiola could well be on the lookout for one more signing during the current transfer window.

However, it does seem as though any new additions will be dependent on players leaving, with Oleksandr Zinchenko the likeliest to depart in the coming days.

There are a number of options that City could go after in their quest to sign a new left-back and we have listed four in this post.

Press the next page as we go through our list.

David Alaba

The Austrian international has less than one year remaining on his contract at Bayern Munich and it doesn’t look like he will be extending his stay at the Allianz Arena beyond the end of the current season.

Guardiola has worked with Alaba before, and the City boss will be a big fan of the 28-year-old’s flexibility with the player able to play at left-back, centre-back, central midfield and on the wing.

Nicolas Tagliafico

Ajax are said to be prepared to let the Argentinian international go for just €25m (£23m) and considering his ability, it could turn out to be a smart purchase.

Tagliafico had been the subject of interest from Chelsea earlier in the summer before they eventually sealed a deal to sign Ben Chilwell instead, but City should have a clear run to sign the defender now.

Alex Telles

Manchester United have been in negotiations for well over a week in order to sign the Brazilian but they have, so far, failed to agree a fee for the defender, despite the player being inside the final twelve months of his contract with Porto.

City could well hijack their rivals move for Telles if they do match the left-back’s asking price before the transfer window closes. Whether that happens, we shall have to wait and see.

Alex Grimaldo

The Benfica defender came through Barcelona’s academy and should be well versed in Guardiola’s style of play. At 25, he is also the youngest player among the four options.

Some think Grimaldo would be a better alternative than Telles but his contract situation means the Spaniard would cost a great deal more than what it would cost to sign the other three players on this list.
