Manchester City have the opportunity to buy Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala this summer but they will have to break their transfer record to bring him to the Etihad.
The German international has signed a new contract but it includes a release clause. Bild reporter Christian Falk says that he has had it “confirmed” that the buyout fee is worth €175m (£146m).
Considering the most that the Cityzens have spent on one player is the £100m shelled out on Jack Grealish in 2021, they would have to splash out a great deal more than that in order to secure Musiala’s signature.
The 21-year-old has been a long-term target for Pep Guardiola’s side, with many tipping him to be Kevin De Bruyne’s replacement.
Musiala does have other suitors
Liverpool, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have all been linked with bids for the German in recent years while other reports have mentioned his former club Chelsea as a potential destination.
The fact that Musiala has opted to sign a new deal, though, would indicate that he isn’t interested in leaving Bayern in the immediate future, even if the reported release clause does suggest he would be open to the idea at some point.
City will likely consider alternatives
While an approach for Musiala does appear to be a long way off, the club will need to look at replacing De Bruyne very soon, with the Belgian’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.
Two other attacking midfielders currently playing in Germany could be targeted instead. Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz is known to be on City’s shortlist, while Xavi Simons may be another option. Although the Dutchman only recently moved clubs in January, it is believed that RB Leipzig are looking to make a quick profit.
