Man City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has expressed his delight after teammate Mateo Kovacic shared a video of himself back in light training.
The Croatian international posted on Instagram showing footage of some individual training drills on the grass, as well as gymwork. Donnarumma responded to the post by saying:
“The brate (brother) is coming back.”
Kovacic has had a nightmare run with injuries over the past eight months, having played just 37 minutes of football since the end of last season.
Why has the Man City player been sidelined for so long?
Kovacic underwent surgery in the summer to fix a longstanding issue with his Achilles. It took him until September to make his return to full training. He subsequently featured as a substitute in games against Everton and Villarreal (in the Champions League) back in October.
However, it soon became clear that the 31-year-old had not fully recovered from his previous injury. Manager Pep Guardiola said that there was still some “calcification” in his ankle, which needed to be treated.
Kovacic was subsequently ruled out for several months, with Guardiola confirming that the midfielder may only return for the “last part of the season”. It appears that he is on schedule to make his comeback sometime in March.
Latest Man City injury news
As well as the good news on Kovacic, it has been revealed by Guardiola that John Stones is fit again. The centre-back has not featured since early December.
Abdukodir Khusanov has not suffered any ill effects from the head injury he sustained against Liverpool, and he is also ready to play in upcoming fixtures.
Jeremy Doku (calf), Savinho (thigh) and Josko Gvardiol (leg fracture) are, however, still on the treatment table.
