Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville says it is now a two-horse race for the Premier League title this season.
Speaking on his podcast following Arsenal’s last-gasp win over Newcastle at the weekend, Neville said that the Gunners and Liverpool are now vying for top spot.
“There’s only two teams who can win this league – Liverpool and Arsenal – I don’t think anyone else can.”
Neville does not mention Manchester City whatsoever, which contradicts the prediction he made last month.
Speaking after Pep Guardiola‘s side beat Wolves 4-0 on the opening day of the campaign, Neville said that it would be “really close” between the Cityzens, Liverpool and Arsenal in terms of title contenders.
Why are Man City no longer considered a threat?
Back-to-back defeats to Tottenham and Brighton have definitely altered Neville’s thinking, but they have not lost in the league since then, having gone to the Emirates and secured a draw against Arsenal.
Liverpool’s defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend also means Guardiola’s team are only 5 points adrift of first place.
Who do City face in their next five league matches?
If the Manchester club are to get back into contention, they will need to put a run of results together. Between now and the November international break, they face Brentford (a), Everton (h), Aston Villa (a), Bournemouth (h) and Liverpool (h).
There are some difficult fixtures in there but if they can win their next four and head into the match against the reigning champions on November 9th with some confidence, there is every chance they can overhaul the Reds’ lead at the top of the table.
Of course, plenty of things could happen between now and then, and all that City can do is focus on the next game and look to secure maximum points.
