BBC Pundit Names 2 City Stars Alongside Chelsea And United Players In His PL Team Of The Week

BBC pundit Garth Crooks has selected Manchester City duo Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku in his Premier League Team of the Week.

Both players had key roles in Pep Guardiola’s side’s 5-1 win over Luton Town at the weekend but Crooks was especially impressed with Gvardiol and his overall form during his first season in England:

“The way the Croatia international has seamlessly slotted into the Manchester City set-up is incredibly impressive. Gvardiol’s success since he burst into the team has given City options.”

“The full-back is as comfortable on the ball as Joao Cancelo was when he was occupying the position and seems just as capable of scoring goals.”

Gvardiol’s positional switch is starting to pay dividends for City

There was some head-scratching earlier in the season when Guardiola started playing the £77.6m centre-back on the left-hand side of defence.

However, as the campaign has worn on, the decision to play Gvardiol in that role has started to make a lot more sense. From the position, he can tuck in to make a back three if needed, whilst he is also capable of making marauding runs down the flank. His goals in recent outings have been an added bonus.

Who else made it into Crooks’ Team of the Week?

The pundit went with Aston Villa number one Emi Martinez in goal, as he helped his team claim a surprise 2-0 away win at Arsenal.

In defence, Gvardiol is joined by Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar and Crystal Palace’s Joachim Andersen, with the latter playing a vital role in the Eagles’ shock victory against Liverpool at Anfield.

Cole Palmer’s four goals for Chelsea against Everton meant that he was an automatic inclusion alongside Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, Fulham’s Andreas Pereira and Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White in midfield.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Wolves’ Matheus Cunha were included with Doku in the front three.
