City In Danger Of Missing Out On Midfield Target As Arsenal Hold ‘Talks’ Over £46M January Transfer

Arsenal have begun “talks” about signing Manchester City target Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace, according to Caught Offside.

The England international is on the radar of the Premier League champions and Liverpool but it appears that the Gunners are keen to beat their rivals to the midfielder’s signature.

Palace are reportedly holding out for a fee in the region of €65m (£54m) for Wharton, who is regarded as one of the most promising young players in the country.

However, Caught Offside claim that Arsenal are hoping to secure his services for around €55m (£46m), with a transfer during the January window a real possibility.

City do need to strengthen their options in midfield

The long-term injury sustained by Rodri has already prompted calls from supporters to reinforce the middle of the park. With Mateo Kovacic now also on the sidelines, the need for a signing is even greater.

Whether Wharton would be considered as a January target, though, it is up for debate. When City’s interest first became known, it was reported that the club saw him as an option for the long term.

Which midfielders could be targeted instead of Wharton?

If City want a similar player to the Crystal Palace star then they may consider pursuing Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi. The Spanish international is a lot more experienced and he would cost a similar amount due to a release clause in his contract. However, there are doubts over whether he would be open to a move.

Alternatives, including Atalanta’s Ederson, Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller, Sporting Lisbon’s Morten Hjulmand and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, have also been suggested. At this moment in time, though, it isn’t known who the Cityzens will make their No.1 priority heading into January.
