Man City Close In On First Summer Signing As They Hold Formal ‘Talks’ To Buy Shot-Stopper

Manchester City are “in talks” to snap up Hibernian goalkeeper Ben Vickery, according to reports.

Edinburgh News claim that the Premier League champions have made their move for the teenager, having tabled a contract offer.

Vickery has not made his senior debut for Hibs as he is currently behind the likes of Jordan Smith, Josef Bursik, Murray Johnson and Max Boruc in the pecking order.

He is, though, a promising young shot-stopper, having played for his current club at Under 18 level as well as being a Scottish youth international.

It is believed that City scouts have watched Vickery on several occasions, and the club has now decided to make an approach ahead of the summer transfer window.

Recruiting players from Scotland has become common practice

After Brexit made it impossible for Premier League teams to sign players under the age of 18 from abroad, the Cityzens and other clubs turned their attention to the home nations.

Youngsters in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have been recruited to academies over recent years, with City having also brought in Josh Adam from Celtic not that long ago. He has since moved on to Wrexham.

A shakeup in City’s goalkeeping department is likely

While Vickery is not expected to be in contention for starts in the senior team any time soon, manager Pep Guardiola could be in the market for a first-choice keeper over the coming months.

There are rumours that the club may sanction the departure of Ederson at the end of the season. The Brazilian came close to leaving the Etihad for Saudi Arabia last year, and that transfer could be revived.

Understudy Stefan Ortega has not managed to reach the levels he showed last campaign either, so new Director of Football Hugo Viana may be on the lookout for a new No.1.
