Manchester City have registered their interest in Chelsea defender Malo Gusto, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

Writing on his Substack, Phillips claimed that both the Premier League champions and Liverpool are keeping tabs on the France Under 21 international’s progress.

The two teams could soon need new first-choice right-backs. Kyle Walker has been struggling for form in recent months while Trent Alexander-Arnold is out of contract at the end of the season.

Gusto is one of Europe’s most promising young fullbacks, having performed capably since sealing his £31m move to Stamford Bridge from Lyon last year, so it is not a surprise that he is on City’s radar.

Chelsea’s stance on selling means City may have to look elsewhere

Phillips claims that Gusto’s current team have “zero interest” in entering talks with the Cityzens or any other team about offloading the player.

That is to be expected when you consider that Gusto’s rival, Chelsea captain Reece James, has spent most of the last two years on the sidelines due to injury.

Since the start of last season, Gusto has played 51 games in all competitions for the Blues, starting 37 of them.

Are there any alternatives to Gusto?

City did seriously consider signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen last summer. The former City academy star had a €40m (£33m) release clause in his contract which made him an attractive target.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side ultimately decided against purchasing the Netherlands international. Considering Walker’s struggles, it is very possible that the club will look to revive their interest in Frimpong.

With the wingback’s buyout clause having expired, it is almost certain that he will cost a lot more if they make a move for him in January or at the end of the season.
