Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font is trying to secure a first option on Man City striker Erling Haaland, according to reports in the Catalan media.
Newspaper Sport claim that CEO Ferran Soriano and Director of Football Hugo Viana were seen holding “meetings” with members of Font’s team, Carles Planchart and Xavier Aguilar, at a hotel in Madrid.
It is believed that Font is not looking to sign Haaland in the immediate future if he beats Joan Laporta to Barca’s presidential nomination.
He is aware that Haaland won’t be leaving the Etihad Stadium anytime soon, having put pen to paper on a nine and a half year contract at the start of last year.
However, Font is keen on getting an option, which means Barcelona would get first dibs on buying Haaland if he becomes available. Get a Haaland Man City shirt from JD Sports here.
Why is a first option important for Barca?
It looks like the La Liga champions are trying to head off any interest from Real Madrid.
Florentino Perez is known to be a big fan of the Norwegian international, and many assume that the 15-time European champions would be favourites for the player’s signature if he comes on the market in the future.
The meeting with Man City could prove inconsequential
Font has made some gains in the polls against Laporta in recent days, especially after an interview was published with former manager Xavi, who revealed that the outgoing president refused to re-sign Lionel Messi following his exit from PSG.
However, Laporta remains favourite to be re-elected, so any promises that City make to Font could end up being worthless anyway.
