Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that he wants to sign a new left-back this summer.
Nico O’Reilly has been deployed there over the last couple of games, with the youngster inverting into midfield, but Guardiola believes the club need to bring in another option to strengthen that position:
“We will need a new full-back in the summer, obviously. Nico O’Reilly is helping, but he’s not a left-back.”
With Kyle Walker having also left for AC Milan on loan, the club have been short of numbers on the right flank too so there is a case to be made for recruiting multiple fullbacks.
Who could Man City sign this summer?
It is believed that the Cityzens have retained a strong interest in Juventus’s Andrea Cambiaso. Journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that the defender is still open to making the move to the Etihad, having agreed terms for a transfer back in January.
The Italian international is said to have other suitors, including Liverpool and Arsenal, but City have done the most groundwork on the deal.
Cambiaso is two-footed – that means he can be deployed in either fullback position, so he would be an ideal candidate, although Juve are said to be demanding around €65m (£56m) for the defender.
Cambiaso is not the only fullback on the club’s list of targets
Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie is reportedly the main alternative to Cambiaso. New Director of Football Hugo Viana has kept an eye on the player since he was at Udinese.
Of course, signing a player from Spurs is never easy, especially when you have to negotiate with Daniel Levy, so the preference is still thought to be Cambiaso at this stage. We shall have to wait and see how things unfold over the coming weeks.
