City And Premier League Rivals Given Fresh Hope Of Landing “Exceptional” Talent After Latest Contract Comments

Manchester City transfer target Jamal Musiala has revealed he is not close to signing a new contract with Bayern Munich.

Reports in the German media earlier this month suggested that he would put pen to paper on a new deal keeping him at the Allianz Arena until the summer of 2029. However, speaking about his situation, Musiala played down the likelihood of anything being signed soon:

“Unfortunately I can’t give the fans a Christmas present. There won’t be any news in the near future. We’ve had a lot of games recently, a lot of travelling. My focus is to concentrate on the games. I want to be free on the pitch, even if there’s a lot of pressure from outside. All in all, all the parameters that contribute to this big decision have to feel good and right for me.”

Musiala did, however, say that he does harbour ambitions of remaining with the Bundesliga side:

“I would like to leave my mark on an era at FC Bayern. If I extend my contract with FC Bayern, that’s my ambition and my goal. But I also know that you have to work for it, with victories, titles and major trophies. Then you get that kind of prestige: I want to earn that at FC Bayern.”

City will be keeping a close eye on negotiations

Musiala’s current contract expires at the end of next season so it is not a surprise that there are rumours about a potential transfer.

City have kept tabs on the 21-year-old for more than a year, while Liverpool and his former club Chelsea have been credited with an interest more recently.

Musiala could be an ideal signing to refresh Pep Guardiola’s ageing squad

It does look increasingly likely that the club’s main playmaker Kevin De Bruyne will leave the Etihad when his deal expires in June. At 33 years of age, the Belgian’s time at the top level does seem to be coming to an end.

A younger replacement will be considered. Following the news that Florian Wirtz is set to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, Musiala would be an excellent alternative. Speaking last year, Premier League legend Michael Owen was effusive in his praise of the player:

“I think he is exceptional, really exceptional. It’s such a shame he chose Germany over England. There’s lots of people comparing him to Bellingham but I think he is a different type of player. He’s a brilliant runner with the ball. I think he’s unbelievable when it comes to dribbling. He’s got the lot this lad.”
