Manchester City had representatives in attendance for Velez Sarsfield’s game against San Antonio Bulo Bulo earlier this week, according to reports.
Scouts in Attendance claim that observers “watched” Maher Carrizo as he scored in Velez’s 3-0 win in the Copa Libertadores group stage fixture on Wednesday night.
The 19-year-old has been attracting attention with his performances in recent weeks, with his goal versus San Antonio his 3rd in as many matches.
Carrizo now has 4 goals and 1 assist in 5 Copa Libertadores appearances, which is an impressive record for someone so young.
What do City fans need to know about the player?
Carrizo came through the youth ranks at Velez, making his senior debut against San Lorenzo in August 2024. He scored his first goal on his first appearance, scoring the third in a 3-1 win. Since then, the teenager has scored 8 times in 31 games.
At international level, the striker impressed when he played for Argentina at the Under-20 South American Championships earlier this year.
Carrizo’s best performance came during a 4-3 victory over Uruguay. He had a hand in all four goals, scoring a brace and registering two assists.
Carrizo is the latest Argentinian who could make the switch to the Eithad
City do tend to seek out the best young talent in Argentina. They have a particularly strong relationship with River Plate, who they have bought Julian Alvarez and Claudio Echeverri from in recent seasons.
A move for Carrizo would be in keeping with their transfer strategy. Manager Pep Guardiola could certainly do with a young forward who can provide backup for Erling Haaland.
Of course, a lot will depend on how much Velez want for their talented teenager in addition to the amount of competition for his signature.
