Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White is still interested in joining Manchester City, according to reports.
The Daily Mail claim that the Cityzens’ move for the England international “isn’t dead” with journalist Tom Collomosse suggesting that the player is open to making the switch to the Etihad.
He cites Gibbs-White’s friendship with Phil Foden and his interest in working with manager Pep Guardiola as two important factors.
However, City were said to be put off from signing the 25-year-old due to the price tag that Forest slapped on him.
It was reported that the Tricky Trees wanted a fee between £70m and £100m for Gibbs-White, which is an amount that Guardiola’s side were not willing to pay.
The ship has sailed for Gibbs-White
Reliable sources at the start of the summer said that Florian Wirtz and the Forest playmaker were the two top options to replace Kevin De Bruyne.
The cost of signing the pair led to Director of Football Hugo Viana looking at cheaper alternatives. £70.5m was spent to bring in AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders and Lyon’s Rayan Cherki instead.
It means there is little room for Gibbs-White in the squad unless another midfielder leaves before the end of the transfer window.
Man City are targeting different positions
It is believed that Viana’s priority now is to sign a right-back. Kyle Walker is set to be offloaded in the coming weeks, with the likes of Everton and Wolves touted as possible destinations.
The preferred target is said to be Newcastle’s Tino Livramento, although there are serious doubts about the Magpies’ willingness to sell the 22-year-old. It is expected that City will consider other options, rather than being drawn into a summer-long transfer saga.
