“Not Capable” Jamie Carragher Makes Man City Claim Amid £42M Nico Gonzalez Transfer

Former Premier League defender Jamie Carragher has reacted to the news that Man City look set to sign Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez.

City have been looking to sign a defensive midfielder since Rodri got injured in September. The Spaniard will likely be out for most of the remainder of the season.

Pep Guardiola‘s side are in need of a boost as they recently lost 5-1 to rivals Arsenal over the weekend. They now sit fourth in the Premier League table, 15 points behind Liverpool who also have a game in hand.

Nico Gonzalez looks set to join City on transfer deadline day for what would be a last-minute deal for Guardiola.

Carragher has said that City desperately need a defensive midfielder in order to replace Rodri, and believes that their current crop of players are ‘not capable’ of stepping up to the role. He says that Gonzalez could be that replacement.

The former Liverpool defender said on Sky Sports: “I do think they need to buy a top quality midfielder – which I’m sure this guy will be – and if they get that, it would be enough for them to get a real fight on. If not, they have a real fight on.

“Mateo Kovacic – we’ve seen for the last few months that he cannot play there on his own, Ilkay Gundogan is not capable either. I think they’re in a real fight for a Champions League position and Pep Guardiola knows that, which is why they’ve done so much business.”

How will Gonzalez fit in at Man City?

The Porto midfielder has made 17 league appearances this season, scoring five goals and contributing four assists which is impressive considering that he plays in more of a holding role.

He will provide City with something different in midfield where he can win the ball and play as a deep-lying playmaker for Guardiola.

It was clear during the Arsenal game that City need a stronger spine to their team, and Gonzalez will provide that.
