Man City Have Made ‘Contact’ With £49M Rated Spanish Ace But 2 PL Rivals Are ‘Front Of The Queue’ To Sign Him

Manchester City have made enquiries about signing Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, according to reports.

The Spanish international’s representatives have made it clear that the player would be interested in moving to England if he leaves his current club at the end of the season.

TBRFootball claim that has alerted Premier League teams, with City having made “contact” with Williams’ entourage, along with Newcastle United.

However, it is believed that Arsenal and Chelsea are “front of the queue” if the 22-year-old gives the green light to a transfer.

Williams has yet to decide on his next move

While English teams are circling, they have yet to receive a signal from the player himself that he wants to move away from Athletic.

Williams has strong links with the club where both he and his older brother came through the academy. It would be a huge wrench for him to depart the club.

There is a feeling that if Athletic do seal Champions League qualification, he will stay. They are currently sitting in 4th place, three points ahead of Villarreal in 5th, with three fixtures remaining.

Why do City want another winger?

While positions such as central midfield, right-back and (potentially) goalkeeper are higher up the list of priorities to strengthen for new Director of Football Hugo Viana, there are reasons why he may be considering reinforcements in wide areas.

Jack Grealish has not had a lot of game time this campaign and there are rumours that he could depart the Etihad Stadium over the coming weeks.

Furthermore, Oscar Bobb has had his season blighted by injury problems, so there would be scope for adding another winger to the first-team squad. With Williams having a €58m (£49m) release clause in his contract, he would be a tempting target.
