Man City may have a battle on their hands to keep Rodri this summer, according to reports in Spain.
Radio Marca journalist Ramon Alvarez de Mon claims that Real Madrid are plotting a €50m (£44m) bid for the 29-year-old:
“Rodri is the midfielder who Real Madrid want. The Madrid team will evaluate their physical form until the World Cup. It is estimated that it could cost about 50 million [euros].”
With the player closing in on the final year of his contract at the Etihad, a decision will have to be made on whether to sell him at the end of the season.
Could Rodri sign a contract extension?
It can’t be ruled out that the Spanish international will commit to the Cityzens and end any speculation linking him with a move to the Bernabeu.
Speaking at an event in Madrid a couple of weeks ago, Rodri’s father said that the player was still “negotiating” with the club about his future, and he did not give anything away in terms of whether his son would accept an offer from Real.
Guardiola has described the Man City star as “irreplaceable”
Manager Pep Guardiola is one of Rodri’s biggest fans. When the midfielder picked up a serious knee injury against Arsenal back in September 2024, he said:
“I expect a lot from my players and I have a duty to find a solution even if Rodri is irreplaceable. When a team doesn’t play with the best midfielder in the world for a long, long time, it is a big blow.”
It has taken a long time for Rodri to recover from that injury, but there have been signs in recent weeks that he is getting back to his best. His future at the club beyond this season, though, remains a big question mark.
