The father of Man City midfielder Rodri has confirmed that his son is “negotiating” a new contract.
Antonio Hernandez was speaking to reporters at an awards ceremony in Spain, and while he was initially asked about speculation linking the player with a move to Real Madrid, he let slip that talks over a contract extension are taking place:
“If I said something, I would have to kill you. I can’t say anything. He’s very comfortable where he is. It’s possible he doesn’t know it [where he will play] yet. He is negotiating. But I know nothing. History has yet to be written.”
Rodri has less than eighteen months left on his current deal, which is set to expire in June 2027.
It is a tricky negotiation for Man City
Based on the fact that he is a Ballon d’Or and a key member of the first-team squad, Rodri will likely be expecting an increase on his £220,000 a week salary.
However, the Spanish international will be 30 in June, and his recent injury history means there will be doubts over whether he warrants a bumper wage rise.
As Rodri’s father mentions, nothing has been decided yet, but talks seem to be taking place about his future.
Bernardo Silva’s future also remains up in the air
The captain’s contract situation is even more pressing than Rodri’s. He will become a free agent on July 1st as things stand.
It appears Silva has not signed a pre-contract agreement with another club. Asked about the player at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, manager Pep Guardiola said the player has not made up his mind yet:
“I don’t have an idea. Honestly, I said to him (Silva), ‘When you take a decision, let me know’. But I don’t have any idea.”
