Manchester City are “closing in on an agreement” with Savinho to extend his contract, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Brazilian was the subject of two bids from Tottenham in the summer, with the North London club prepared to go as high as £60m to secure the winger’s signature.

However, the Cityzens turned down both approaches for Savinho, with the player now willing to commit his future to his current team.

Writing on his X account, Romano said that talks have reached the “final stages”, and an announcement on the new deal is likely to come sooner rather than later.

Savinho was open to joining Spurs

It is believed that Thomas Frank’s side were encouraged to make a move for the forward after receiving positive signals from his entourage.

However, it seems as if Savinho has had a change of heart about his future in recent weeks. After scoring against Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup midweek, he made a point of kissing the club badge.

That was the clearest sign yet that he was keen on remaining in Manchester, and this subsequent report from Romano seems to confirm that he will stay with the team for the long term.

Man City did have a replacement in mind

It should be pointed out that City have never actively tried to sell Savinho. Manager Pep Guardiola was happy with the player’s performances during his first season at the Etihad.

However, contingency plans were put in place. If the 21-year-old was offloaded, it is believed that a move for Real Madrid’s Rodrygo would have been actively pursued.

With the 24-year-old having given no indications that he was keen on leaving the Bernabeu, though, City were probably wise to retain Savinho’s services.
