Man City Could Offer £31M Signing As ‘Bait’ In ‘Huge’ Bid For Top January Target

Manchester City are considering whether to include James Trafford in a “huge player-plus-cash” offer for Newcastle fullback Tino Livramento, according to reports.

The former Chelsea and Southampton defender is a top target for Pep Guardiola’s side ahead of the January transfer window, and TEAMtalk claim they will try to tempt Newcastle into selling up.

Up until now, the Magpies have been reluctant to countenance any proposals for Livramento, who they deem to be one of their key players.

However, City believe using Trafford as “bait” could help open up a dialogue in future negotiations.

Newcastle wanted the keeper last summer

Eddie Howe’s team made a concerted effort to secure Trafford’s signature prior to City wrapping up a deal for the 23-year-old.

The Cityzens used their buyback clause to steal a march on their rivals, paying £31m for the former England Under 21 international. However, due to a sell-on clause, which was also part of the agreement with Burnley, £4m of that fee was returned to the Etihad.

Trafford would be open to leaving Man City

Despite the keeper only signing a five-year deal with the Manchester club back in July, he is unlikely to be happy with his current situation.

Just a month after Trafford’s move, City snapped up Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain. The Italian international has been the club’s first-choice since joining the team. Guardiola spoke out about the issue at the end of October:

“The keeper is a special situation because the keeper plays, normally one, and the second one doesn’t. All I can say is we are delighted with his behaviour in training.”

Since Donnarumma’s arrival, Trafford has only played two matches in the Carabao Cup, and if the opportunity to join Newcastle does come up, you’d think he’d be keen to take it.
