Danny Mills Names The “Outstanding” Manchester City Star That He Thinks Should Be Dropped By Club And Country

Former Manchester City defender Danny Mills has said that Phil Foden shouldn’t play for both his club and the England National team based on his current form.

Foden had a superb year last season, winning the Premier League Player of the Season award for 2024, however, his form has faltered this year, which has earned the attacker a lot of criticism.

The 24-year-old has made 38 appearances for Manchester City this season, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists for Pep Guardiola‘s side, and he has also struggled to make an impact for the England team, playing both as a winger and attacking midfielder.

However, despite all his talent, Mills believes that he should be dropped based on his form this season for club and country. He told Foot Italia: “On Phil Foden’s current form, I don’t think he should be starting for neither club nor country. He is an unbelievably talented player and he was outstanding last season and everyone thought that this year would be his year.

“After the season he had last year, you’d think that was when he was going to kick on and get better and better, but that just hasn’t happened. There are obviously plenty of factors at play, Manchester City have dropped in form this season so that hasn’t helped.

“When Foden goes into that England side and has to play in a more rigid formation, it’s difficult to him to have the impact he does at City. Thomas Tuchel has come out and said that he’s in between a nine and a 10, but that’s not a position on the football pitch. Is that him saying he needs to do something different or better, because you won’t get into the team as a 10 or an eight? I don’t think he’s ever been a wide player either.”

Manchester City star Foden dropped in Tuchel’s England side

During the recent international break, Foden started the first game of the Tuchel era for England, in a 2-0 win against Albania. He was however substituted after 74 minutes for West Ham star Jarrod Bowen.

After his quiet performance in the first game, Foden was dropped for the second match against Latvia in which the Three Lions won 3-0.

He was dropped for Bowen, and then came on as a number 10 to replace Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham after 67 minutes. It seems as though he has lost his initial spot in Tuchel’s starting XI.
