Manchester City Players Out of Contract in June

Manchester City aren’t having the best of seasons so far – despite their strong record, they sit five points behind the Premier League leaders (Arsenal). As such, some City fans may already be looking towards next season – here we take a look at Manchester City players out of contract in June – who will Pep Guardiola be looking to cut from the squad for 2023/24?

City have three players on their books whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the current season. One of them has made 16 Premier League appearances for City this season – would you be sad to see any of them go?

Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan has been a Manchester City player since 2016. However, now he’s at the age of 32, his time may be coming to an end.

Pep Guardiola likes his team to play an intense brand of pressing football – a player of Gundogan’s age can handle it for now, but for how much longer? Despite being a talented midfield player, you have to feel that City may look to invest in new blood.

During his time at the club, Gundogan has mad 173 appearances for City and has scored 38 goals. This season, he’s played in 16 league games and has popped up with two goals.

Scott Carson

Veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson is another player who is likely to be let go by City in the summer. A solid shot stopper on his day, at age 37, it’s safe to assume that his prime years are behind him.

Carson has been at City since 2021. In that time, he has failed to unseat Ederson in the Premier League, primarily being used in cup competitions and as backup.

Over the course of his career, Carson has played for teams such as Leeds United, Aston Villa and Liverpool. Additionally, he’s also picked up four England caps – though his last came in 2011.

Benjamin Mendy

Benjamin Mendy is another player likely to be released by City at the end of the season, albeit for very different reasons. He is currently awaiting another trial for his rape charges – he has been cleared on six charges, with another still to be decided.

His last game for City was in August 2021, in a 1-0 defeat against Spurs. Since then, he has been unavailable for selection.

It would be surprising to see Mendy remain a City player following the summer, regardless of the trial’s final outcome. At this point, his time away from the squad has been too lengthy – Guardiola likes his players to be well drilled and cohesive with one another.
