Manchester City’s Five Most Influential Players Of The Past Decade

As we enter the second month of 2020, and into a winter break, it seems the perfect time to reflect back on some of the best players that have graced the Etihad over the past ten years.

It has been a remarkable decade for City, marked with a trophy haul unprecedented in the club’s history and there have certainly been some key figures instrumental in the team’s success.

The Citizens have made a whole host of signings since the takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group back in 2008, but there are certain players who stand out.

Press the “next page” as we look at five of the most influential City stars of the last decade.

Sergio Aguero

The Argentine’s inclusion on this list cannot be disputed. After arriving from Atletico Madrid for £38m he has broken all sorts of records.

Aguero is now the club’s all-time top goalscorer and scored one of the most important goals in the club’s history to win the Premier League title in the 2011/12 campaign.

David Silva

The Spanish magician has spent nine and a half remarkable years at the Etihad, winning 4 Premier League trophies, two FA Cups and four League Cups.

Silva has amassed a total of 137 assists (as well as 74 goals) during his 421 appearances for the Citizens. He will end his association with the club after a wonderful career in the summer.

Vincent Kompany

Vinny started out life at the club being used as a holding midfielder by manager Mark Hughes, but under Roberto Mancini and subsequent coaches, he became a commanding centre-back and a true leader.

One of his most memorable moments, though, came with a long-range rasping shot against Leicester last season, which sealed a crucial 1-0 win as he helped clinch his fourth league title at the club.

Yaya Toure

The Ivorian was a force to be reckoned with for most of his eight seasons at City. A slightly unorthodox midfielder, he had the athleticism of Patrick Vieira but had a shot on him like Frank Lampard.

Toure scored 79 goals in 316 games during his time at the Etihad and helped his team to three Premier League trophies in the process.

Fernandinho

The midfield destroyer that every good team needs, the Brazilian has been an integral part of City’s success, especially in the Pep Guardiola era.

Fernandinho would have spent seven years at the club come the end of the season and remains a key first-team player.
