RANKED: How Much The 4 Premier League Clubs Earned In Prize Money From The 2021/22 Champions League

Champions League Trophy

The riches that come with qualifying for the Champions League every season should not be underestimated.

While the Premier League is, by far, the richest domestic competition in world football, the additional revenue that the European Cup offers, gives clubs an advantage in the transfer market.

A team that makes it to the final, or even to the semi-final, can stand to make over €100m in prize money, not to mention gate receipts.

Press the next page as we assess the earnings of the four Premier League teams who qualified for the 2021/22 edition of the Champions League.

4) Manchester United – €78m

The Red Devils were knocked out at the round of 16 in last season’s Champions League, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Atletico Madrid.

Even so, the Manchester club were still handed a sizeable amount in prize money from UEFA for getting to that stage in the competition.

United’s run in the Europa League this campaign won’t see them receive anything close to what they were given for their exploits the previous year.

3) Chelsea – €92m

The Blues were the holders last season, but their grip on the trophy was relinquished when they were knocked out in dramatic fashion by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Despite an awful domestic campaign, Chelsea reached the exact same stage this year, and they can stand to earn a similar figure from prize money.

However, with no European football likely for next season, the London club stand to lose a sizeable amount of revenue. That could have a significant effect on their ability to spend this summer.

2) Manchester City – €109m

Like Chelsea, City failed to overcome Real last campaign, but they made it a stage further to the semi-finals, losing 6-5 on aggregate.

Ironically, they will be facing the exact same opponents in this year’s competition, but they will be hoping for a very different outcome.

City’s strong performance in the Champions League over recent years has helped them stay within Financial Fairplay rules and to maintain their status at the top of the Premier League.

1) Liverpool – €120m

Real Madrid made it a hat-trick of Premier League clubs defeated in last season’s competition, by beating the Reds in the final at the Stade de France.

It was the second time in four years that the two teams had met in the final but the La Liga side came out on top on both occasions. Even so, Liverpool’s coffers were filled up by their strong performance in Europe.

Due to their struggles in the Premier League this campaign, though, they could lose a sizeable sum of money that could cost them the chance to sign players, including Jude Bellingham.
