REPORT: Manchester City To Hand Home-Grown Wonderkid New Long-Term Contract

Newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City are set to hand starboy Rico Lewis a new long-term contract at the Etihad Stadium, according to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

City head coach Pep Guardiola is understood to be a ‘big fan’ of Lewis and was keen to tie him down to the club as soon as possible. Reportedly, talks had been ongoing for months, but they are set to conclude imminently.

In Romano’s tweet, he wrote: Understand Manchester City are closing in on new long term deal for Rico Lewis — agreement set to be completed. Talks had already been advanced for months and now it’s about final details. Pep, big fan of Rico and his potential. He’s staying at City. Here we go.”

Rico Lewis’ impressive first season at Manchester City

Rico Lewis has burst onto the Premier League scene with aplomb this season. A talented attacking full-back, he also displays a solid defensive acumen – not to mention blistering pace and adroit dribbling ability.

The 18-year-old joined Manchester City’s academy back in 2013, when he was just eight years of age. In 2022, nine years later, he finally made his first team debut for the Citizens in a 4-0 win over AFC Bournemouth.

Since then, the Bury-born right back has made 21 appearances for Manchester City’s senior team. He scored his first goal for the club in the Champions League against Sevilla, which came back in November. As things stand, it is his only goal for the club.

On the international stage, Lewis has yet to make his senior debut for England, but he has been regularly capped by the Three Lions’ various youth teams. So far, he has made 15 appearances for England at youth level, scoring a single goal. His only international goal came against Wales U18s in a draw, all the way back in September 2021.
