Manchester City have picked up criticism from pundit Steve McManaman for failing to find an adequate deputy for Rodri in the wake of their 2-1 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.

McManaman said that Rodri’s sending off was the result of a ‘ridiculous incident’ and commented on how much his absence contributed to City’s downfall on the day.

Matheus Nunes and Mateo Kovacic tried to fill Rodri’s boots while he wasn’t available – however, they could do little to plug the gaps left behind.

A former Citizens player, McManaman turned out for City between the years of 2003 and 2005 (the year of his retirement). He made 35 appearances during this time, but failed to score a goal.

Speaking on the Official Premier League website, McManaman said: “Probably not [on whether Manchester City lose the game without Rodri]. He’s the metronome in the middle that dictates how they play and he’s very quick with his play.

“It is more frustrating that he got sent off for such a ridiculous incident as well. I think that [Rodri’s absence] plays a huge part.”

Can Manchester City cope without Rodri?

As they have shown on several previous occasions, Manchester City appear to be far worse off when Rodri is not in the matchday squad. There is no one in the team who can adequately fill his shoes – certainly not with ten men on the pitch.

Kalvin Phillips was brought in to be Rodri’s deputy – however, limited game time and struggles with fitness have left him a shadow of the ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ who we all saw during his successful period at Leeds United.

Certainly, he is not good enough to adequately replace the Spaniard when Rodri is not available for selection. Phillips is an excellent passer of the ball, but he is too static and does not react to situations quickly enough to be an effective defensive presence.

Indeed, without Rodri, Pep Guardiola’s men simply cannot implement their style of play without risking being caught on the counter. With Rodri in the team, this is far less of an issue, considering how well he reads the game.
