The Five Argentinian Stars Who Have The Most Appearances In The Premier League

As we continue our series of posts looking at the top appearance makers in the Premier League era from different countries, today is the turn of Argentina.

Some of the best players in the history of the game were born in the South American country and there have been a few great ones who have graced English football as well.

Surprisingly, though, there are actually more defenders than forwards on this list, showing that Argentina is capable of producing a wide variety of players.

Press the next page as we look at the five Argentinians who have made the most appearances in Premier League history.

5) Federico Fernandez (Swansea and Newcastle) – 184 apps

Probably a surprise inclusion on this list for some but the defender has now been playing in the Premier League for six and a half years since he was signed by Swansea from Napoli for €10m.

After spending four seasons in South Wales, Fernandez made the switch to Newcastle in 2018 following the Swans’ relegation to the Championship and he has been a first-team regular for the Magpies.

4) Carlos Tevez (West Ham, Manchester United And Manchester City) – 202 apps

After making an instant impact at West Ham, the forward moved to United after one season in 2007. At Old Trafford, he struck up a great partnership with Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, where he helped the Red Devils win the Premier League twice, as well as the Champions League.

However, Tevez then made the controversial switch to City in 2009. The Argentine was a prolific scorer during his four seasons at the Etihad, helping to win the league in 2012. He left for Juventus in 2013.

3) Fabricio Coloccini (Newcastle) – 211 apps

Instantly identifiable with his long curly hair, the centre-back took a while to settle in England before he became a stalwart of Newcastle’s backline.

Coloccini was relegated during his first season with the Magpies but he stuck around to help them regain their Premier League status. He was named captain at the end of his third campaign on Tyneside and stayed for seven years in total before returning to Argentina.

2) Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) – 268 apps

Undoubtedly one of the greatest strikers of the Premier League era, the £35million that City paid for the Argentine back in 2011 has been recouped many times over.

Over the last decade, Aguero has amassed 180 league goals, putting him fourth on the all-time list behind Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Andy Cole.

1) Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City and West Ham) – 303 apps

For City fans, the right-back needs no introduction. The defender arrived just before the Sheikh Mansour era kicked off but, despite the arrivals of so many star names, he was an established first-team player at the Etihad for nine years.

During his time at the Citizens, he won two Premier League titles and five major trophies in total. He eventually left for West Ham in 2017 before retiring back in October.
