The Five Best Players From Mexico To Play In The Premier League

After looking at the best players from South Korea who played in the Premier League last week, we now move on to Mexico.

Only ten footballers from the Central American country have made appearances in the English top flight, which means we did struggle to come up with a top-five for this list.

It’s probably fair to say that only two Mexicans have really made a name for themselves in this country but, nonetheless, we have still ranked them.

Press the next page as we count down the five best players from Mexico to play in England.

5) Carlos Salcido (Fulham)

As we said in the introduction, it is slim pickings when it comes to Mexicans who have played in England, so selecting the left-back came from necessity more than anything.

Salcido performed well during a four-year spell with PSV Eindhoven but, after arriving at Fulham following the 2010 World Cup, he struggled, and he was offloaded after just one season at Craven Cottage.

4) Guillermo Franco (West Ham)

The forward had been a consistent scorer for Monterrey in his native Mexico during the mid-00s and it led to him moving to Villarreal, where he was plagued by a number of injuries.

West Ham took a chance on Franco in 2009, when the Hammers were in deep financial trouble. To be fair to the striker, his five goals in 23 appearances was not a bad return before he was released at the end of his one-year deal.

3) Carlos Vela (Arsenal)

The forward had his best years after he left the Gunners, having very successful spells at Real Sociedad and Los Angeles FC.

Even so, Vela did start his career at Arsenal, and during his 64 appearances for the London club over a six-year period, he bagged a respectable 11 goals.

2) Javier Hernandez (Manchester United & West Ham)

Otherwise known as “Chicharito”, the diminutive striker scored 20 goals in his first campaign with United, becoming known for his poacher’s finishes inside the penalty box.

Hernandez’s goal return did diminish somewhat over the next few seasons before being loaned out to Real Madrid. He was then sold to Bayer Leverkusen, where he impressed enough to earn a move back to England with West Ham. His three years with the Hammers were far less successful.

1) Raul Jimenez (Wolves)

Wolves loaned the Mexican target man from Benfica initially before signing him on a permanent basis for £30m after a good first season at Molineux.

Jimenez scored 27 times in all competitions during his second year but a serious head injury in November 2020 led to him being sidelined for nine months. The striker is back as a regular starter now but he has struggled to recapture the form he showed after first arriving in England.
