The FIVE Best Players From The USA To Play In The Premier League

The TV comedy Ted Lasso has certainly not helped the perception of Americans when it comes to football. However, there have been some players from across the pond that have made the grade.

Generally, the biggest issue for U.S talent has been the big step up from Major League Soccer to the Premier League. Some have made the leap and have been found wanting, while others have adapted.

The five stars on this list had distinguished careers in the top flight, although, it must be said, only the top three have really gone down as unqualified successes.

Press the next page as we count down the best players from the USA to play in England.

5) Claudio Reyna – Sunderland & Manchester City

Reyna received 112 caps for the United States and he is widely regarded as one of the best players that the country has produced. However, his time in England was plagued by injuries.

Just nine months after moving to Sunderland, he sustained an ACL injury which kept him out for the remainder of the 2002/03 season. He moved on to Manchester City but he only managed 88 appearances over three and a half years.

4) Christian Pulisic – Chelsea

Ironically, Pulisic is another American who has undeniable talent but has been plagued by injuries since moving to Chelsea for £58m back in 2019.

The winger has though, managed to rack up over 100 appearances, scoring 22 goals and providing 18 assists, which isn’t a poor record by any means.

3) Brad Friedel – Liverpool, Blackburn, Aston Villa & Spurs

The goalkeeper didn’t really get a chance when he first arrived in England at Liverpool, and it was only when he made the switch to Blackburn that he managed to make a name for himself.

Friedel won the League Cup during his eight years at Ewood Park. He then went on to have shorter spells at Villa and Tottenham before he retired at the age of 43.

2) Clint Dempsey – Fulham & Spurs

The forward is probably best known for one eye-catching season when he bagged 23 goals in all competitions during 2011/12. However, he was a consistent player for Fulham throughout his five and a half year stay at Craven Cottage.

60 goals and 21 assists in 232 appearances is a pretty impressive record and, while he did have a less successful time when he moved to Tottenham, he will be remembered fondly by most fans.

1) Tim Howard – Manchester United & Everton

The shot-stopper was a mainstay in Everton’s goal for the best part of a decade but he was brought to Europe by Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson all the way back in 2003.

After leaving for Goodison Park, he went on to make 413 appearances for the Toffees, keeping a very impressive 134 clean sheets.
