The Five German Stars Who Have The Most Appearances In The Premier League

In our third article looking at the highest appearances makers in Premier League history from their respective countries, we take a look at players from Germany.

Generally speaking, most of the top stars from the country tend to stay in their homeland, with the majority having been signed by the Bundesliga’s dominant team Bayern Munich.

However, there have been a few exceptions to that rule, and the names on this list are pretty high profile ones who have made their mark in the game.

Press the next page as we countdown the top five German players who have made the most appearances in the Premier League era.

5) Jens Lehmann (Arsenal) – 148 appearances

A goalkeeper who was more well-known for his eccentric character than the saves he made, the German was still part of the famous ‘Invincibles’ team that went unbeaten during the 2003/04 season.

Lehmann did have the occasional mistake in him, most notably the one he made in the Champions League final in 2006 which got him sent off early in the game against Barcelona. He was still named Champions League Goalkeeper of the Year, though, and went on to be the club’s number one for another season.

4) Per Mertesacker (Arsenal) – 156 appearances

When he arrived at the Emirates in 2011, many questioned Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s thinking due to worries about the centre-back’s lack of pace. While the defender’s speed was a problem at times, he did help secure three FA Cups and a number of top-four finishes for the Gunners.

At 6ft 6, Mertesacker’s height meant he was always commanding in the air and he was seen as a leader in the squad. After retirement, he became Arsenal’s academy director.

3) Mesut Ozil (Arsenal) – 184 appearances

The attacking midfielder’s legacy at Arsenal may have been tarnished by how things ended at the Gunners but there is no doubting his quality. After signing from Real Madrid for £42.5m, he went on to score 44 goals and provide 77 assists in 254 appearances.

Ozil did lift three FA Cups and a Community Shield during his time at the Emirates but he was never quite able to inspire the team to push on to the next level and challenge for league titles, like he did at Real.

2) Didi Hamann (Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester City) – 268 appearances

The midfielder had been a prominent player for Bayern in the mid-nineties before opting to leave for Newcastle in 1998. After just one season in the North East, he was snapped up by Liverpool.

With the Reds, he was pivotal in winning the cup treble in 2001, as well as playing a vital role in securing the historic Champions League win in 2005. He eventually left Anfield for City in 2006, where he was a squad player for three more seasons.

1) Robert Huth (Chelsea, Middlesbrough, Stoke and Leicester) – 322 appearances

The centre-back actually came through the youth academy at Chelsea, and he won two league titles with the Blues. However, he really made his name away from Stamford Bridge.

Huth played for Middlesbrough for three seasons in the top flight before they were relegated. The defender then moved on to Stoke where he played an important role in Tony Pulis’s team. However, it was a late-career move to Leicester which really made him a household name, helping to secure the Foxes’ stunning league title success in 2016.
