The FIVE Most In Form Goalkeepers In The Premier League

After looking at the most in form strikers across Europe’s top five divisions last week, this post will focus on goalkeepers in the Premier League.

To work out which keepers are in form, we will be comparing Post Shot xG with the actual number of goals they have conceded in league matches this season.

Post Shot xG measures the likelihood of a shot being scored. If a keeper concedes fewer than this number, they get a plus (+) score. We have looked through the stats to see which number ones (who have played in at least five matches) in England’s top flight have been overperforming.

Press the next page as we list the five most in-form shot-stoppers in the Premier League (based on stats from FBRef).

5) Emi Martinez – Aston Villa – +1.1 Post Shot xG Minus Goals Conceded

The Villa keeper sneaks into our top five. He has been one of the few players in Steven Gerrard’s side who has been performing at his best this campaign.

Despite Martinez’s efforts, though, the Villans have still only won two of their eight games, and they currently sit fourteenth in the table, with many questioning whether Gerrard is the right man for the job.

4) Bernd Leno – Fulham – +1.8

The German international swapped the Emirates for Craven Cottage in the summer and he appears to be thriving as the newly-promoted side’s number one.

After playing second fiddle to Aaron Ramsdale at Arsenal last season, Leno will be delighted with how things have gone since deciding to join his new team.

3) Nick Pope – Newcastle – + 2.0

The Magpies paid Burnley £10m for the 30-year-old during the summer transfer window and it looks like money well spent, based on his early season form.

Pope’s shot-stopping ability is up there with the best in the Premier League, and that is borne out in the numbers over the past couple of months.

2) Robert Sanchez – Brighton – +3.8

The Spaniard rose from obscurity to become the Seagulls’ first-choice keeper under previous manager Graham Potter and he seems to be going from strength to strength.

Sanchez is still only 24 years of age, so there is room for him to improve even further in the future. It remains to be seen how long he will remain on the south coast.

1) Jordan Pickford – Everton – +4.1

After a few seasons where the England international’s form dipped alarmingly, he is now back at the very top of his game, saving his team goals week in, week out.

Pickford’s eccentricities mean he is certainly not a keeper that every fan will appreciate, but he does deliver good displays for both club and country.
