The Five Norwegian Stars Who Have The Most Appearances In The Premier League

Following our list looking at the top appearance makers in Premier League history from Nigeria last time, this week we turn our focus to Norway.

The Scandinavian country has a strong affinity with English football, with many Norwegians supporting Premier League clubs.

There are also a number of prominent footballers from Norway who have gone on to have great success playing in the English top-flight, with every player on this list having made more than 200 appearances.

Press the next page as we count down the five Norwegians who have made the most appearances of the Premier League era.

5) Brede Hangeland (Fulham and Crystal Palace) – 238 apps

The towering centre-back spent six and a half years at Craven Cottage between 2008 and 2014, helping Fulham as they made it to the UEFA Cup Final in 2010.

By the time he was released by the Cottagers, Hangeland had turned 33 and he spent two seasons with Crystal Palace before retiring from the professional game in August 2016.

4) Morten Gamst Pedersen (Blackburn Rovers) – 260 apps

The Norwegian was signed by Blackburn boss Graeme Souness before the Scot left for Newcastle, and the winger initially struggled to make an impact under the management of Mark Hughes.

However, Pedersen did begin to feature more prominently and, by the end of his first season, he had established himself as a first-team regular. The midfielder spent nine years with Rovers before leaving for Turkish side Karabukspor in 2013.

3) Henning Berg (Blackburn and Manchester United) – 275 apps

The centre-back had a very successful career in England, winning the league title with Blackburn in 1995 before making the switch to United in 1997.

Berg was part of the famous treble-winning side in 1999 and won another Premier League trophy a year later. He returned to Blackburn after a three-year spell at Old Trafford and went on to lift the League Cup in 2001.

2) Claus Lundekvam (Southampton) – 290 apps

The defender was a Saints player from 1996 until 2008, with nine of those seasons being played in the Premier League, so it is not a surprise he is so high up on this list.

Lundekvam captained the south coast club for many years, with his most notable achievement coming when he helped guide his team to the FA Cup final in 2003.

1) John Arne Riise (Liverpool and Fulham) – 321 apps

The left-back/winger was a standout player for the Reds during a notable period of success in cup competitions. While the Merseysiders continued to struggle somewhat in the league, he still picked up seven major trophies in seven seasons.

Riise was part of the team that won the 2005 Champions League, providing the assist for Steven Gerrard’s goal, which sparked the comeback. He did, however, miss his kick in the shootout. He left Anfield for Roma in 2008 before returning to England for a three-year spell at Fulham.
