The FIVE Premier League Clubs Who Have Raised The Most Money From Sales Of Academy Stars Since 2015

Football clubs set up academies with the hope of developing footballers who are talented enough to break through into their first team.

Some teams, however, produce so many talented players that they make a sizeable amount of money from the sales of their youth products.

For this post, we have taken our data from the CIES Football Observatory, who have been assessing the profitability of academies across the world.

Press the next page as we count down the five Premier League teams who have made the most money from selling youngsters over the last seven years.

5) Aston Villa (€132m)

Jack Grealish’s £100m move to Manchester City last summer is the main reason why the Villans have made the top five, above the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Leicester.

While the England international has yet to really hit his straps since moving to the Etihad, many believe that the attacking midfielder possesses the talent to become one of City’s key players.

4) Arsenal (€139m)

The Hale End academy has produced a lot of players for the Gunners’ first team over the years, with the most recent examples being Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka.

However, not every youngster makes the grade. Arsenal have sold the likes of Alex Iwobi to Everton and Joe Willock to Newcastle in recent seasons for sizeable fees.

3) Manchester City (€145m)

Since the arrival of Sheikh Mansour at City, significant time and money has been devoted to the academy in order to make the club more self-sustainable.

It has paid off to some degree, with Phil Foden having established himself as a first-team regular, while players such as Kelechi Iheanacho have also been sold for big profits.

2) Liverpool (€171m)

Liverpool’s academy did struggle to produce talent in the early 00s but, over the last five to ten years, things have changed in that regard, with the likes of Raheem Sterling and Trent Alexander-Arnold coming through the ranks at Kirkby.

Sterling’s £49m move to City was the most high-profile sale of an academy player, but a host of other youngsters, including Harry Wilson, Ryan Kent and Danny Ward have also been sold for big fees.

1) Chelsea €210m

There is no doubt that the Blues have produced some of the best homegrown players in recent years, and a number have been sold on for a considerable profit.

The sales of Tammy Abraham to Roma and Fikayo Tomori to AC Milan last summer brought in the best part of £60m, and there are other examples, including Tino Livramento and Marc Guehi, who have also been offloaded in just the last twelve months alone.
