The Top Five Bargain Transfers Of The Premier League Era

With the amount of money that has been thrown around by Premier League clubs over the last thirty years, it is not often that a team pays under a player’s real value and get themselves a genuine bargain.

However, good scouting has led to some remarkable low-cost deals for players who would go on to become legends at their respective clubs.

To be honest with you, there were quite a few other players who could have made our top five, but we believe the players we have chosen are all deserving of their place on this list.

Press the next page as we countdown our top bargains of the Premier League era.

5) Vincent Kompany

The Belgian left City after winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups and four Community Shields, but he cost just £6m when he signed from Hamburg in 2008.

Considering the amount of money the club have spent on other players over the years, the decision to bring in Kompany proved to be an inspired piece of business.

4) Sol Campbell

Arsenal pulled a rabbit out of a hat when they secured the England international on a free transfer from their fierce rivals Spurs in 2002.

Campbell’s defection made him a villain on one side of North London but the Gunners reaped the benefits with the defender contributing massively to their “Invincibles” campaign in 2003/04.

3) N’Golo Kante

The Frenchman was playing for Ligue One minnows Caen when he was snapped up by Leicester City for just £5.6m in 2015. During his one and only season with the Foxes, he helped them win a shock league title.

Kante would subsequently be sold to Chelsea where he went on to secure his second consecutive Premier League trophy, being named the PFA Player of the Year in the process.

2) Patrick Vieira

Some may argue that Sol Campbell was more of a bargain, considering he was signed for free, but Vieira joined for only £3.5m from AC Milan in 1996 and made a lasting impression at the club.

During his nine years with Arsenal, the Frenchman helped his team win three Premier League titles and three FA Cups, captaining the Gunners for the “Invincibles” season in 2003/04.

1) Eric Cantona

The Frenchman was a talismanic figure, who helped transform Manchester United from nearly men into the all-conquering team of the mid to late nineties.

Despite snapping him up from fierce rivals Leeds, the Red Devils only paid £1.2m for Cantona, who went on to score 81 goals in 179 appearances over five seasons.
