The TOP FIVE Highest Paid Footballers In The World

Footballers’ salaries have gone through the roof over the past ten years and despite the threat of clubs going under during the global health crisis, recent examples suggest the trend of high wages will continue well into the future.

It seems players are increasingly looking to run down their contracts in order to get the best possible deal and clubs are having to pay through the nose in order to keep hold of their top talent.

Our list comprises of three stars who all play for the club, and it is not hard to guess who they are. Even so, the amount these players are earning is still quite surprising.

Press the next page as we name the top five highest paid footballers in world football.

5) Cristiano Ronaldo – £385,000 a week

There are some reports that suggest the Portuguese international’s wage has been cut by a quarter after United missed out on the Champions League last season but those claims have not been substantiated.

It may, though, be part of the reason why Ronaldo is so keen on leaving United, although there are certainly plenty of other possible explanations for his potential exit.

4) Mo Salah – £400,000 a week

Although the Egyptian’s base salary is believed to be £350,000 a week, it is said that he will likely reach £400,000 a week if he manages to trigger a number of performance-related bonuses.

Salah is now, by some distance, the highest earner in Liverpool’s history and it will be interesting to see how he performs over the next few years. As we have seen with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez in the past, a player’s performance has been known to suffer after a bumper pay deal.

3) Neymar – £606,000 a week

The Brazilian’s future at PSG is currently up in the air despite the fact that he signed a new four-year contract only last year. Whether his club are looking to cut the wage bill, it isn’t known.

Neymar has undoubtedly achieved a lot during his time in France, racking up 100 goals in all competitions, and winning four League titles as well as eight domestic cups.

2) Lionel Messi – £960,000 a week

The Argentinian’s basic wage is eyewatering, but he hasn’t really justified his expense during his first year with PSG, scoring only 11 times in 34 appearances; a far cry from his consistency in front of goal for Barcelona.

Messi is undoubtedly helping to promote the profile of the French club so merchandising and sponsorship deals are likely to have paid back some of that salary.

1) Kylian Mbappe – £1,000,000 a week

The Frenchman is the first £1m a week footballer and whether you think he deserves it is probably beside the point. He was going to be available on a free transfer so he played his hand perfectly to get the most out of his employers.

PSG have only managed to extend his contract by three years so we are not far away from another saga about a potential transfer away from France.
