The Top Five Highest Paid Players In The Premier League

Premier League footballer salaries have gone through the roof over the past two decades, and that is pretty much a reflection of the huge broadcast revenues that the top flight of English football brings in.

On top of the wealthy backers that Premier League clubs tend to attract, it means some of the star players earn nearly as much as top American sport stars.

For this list of the top five highest-paid players, we have used the data collected by Sportrac, who calculate the earnings of footballers.

Press the next page as we countdown the top earners in the Premier League.

5) Mesut Ozil (£13.975m a year)

Considering he has not even been selected in Arsenal’s Europa League squad, the Gunners are really pouring money down the drain by freezing out the German playmaker.

Ozil was at the height of his powers when he signed the lucrative deal back in February 2018 but the terms of the contract always looked excessive and it turned out to be a huge mistake.

4) Paul Pogba (£15m a year)

The Frenchman was actually inside the final twelve months of his current deal before Manchester United took up their option to extend his stay for a further year.

Pogba is still on the contract he signed when he re-joined the Red Devils from Juventus in 2016, meaning he has earned £50m over the past four years, and he will have taken home a staggering £90m by the end of the 2021/22 season.

3) Raheem Sterling (£15.6m a year)

The England international has more than merited his pay packet considering how successful he has been over the past five years. He scored 31 goals in all competitions last season, making him City’s top scorer.

At 25 years of age, Sterling is still yet to reach his peak years and he has already more than paid back the £49m City gave Liverpool for the player all the way back in 2015.

2) Kevin De Bruyne (£16.7m a year)

The Belgian international is the reigning PFA Player of the Year, and his salary is undoubtedly commensurate to his value to the team. City’s highest earner is the club’s most influential player and it looks as though he could be offered another contract extension very soon.

De Bruyne put pen to paper on his last deal all the way back in January 2018 and, with his contract expiring in 2023, the Citizens are said to be planning on extending his stay further.

1) David De Gea (£19.5m a year)

It is a colossal wage considering not many would rank him as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League anymore. The Spaniard has been a class shot-stopper over the years but the new deal he signed in 2019 was a reflection of past achievements rather than current form.

De Gea’s £375,000 a week contract runs for another three years, and it remains to be seen whether he’ll still be number one by then, with Dean Henderson waiting in the wings.
