The Top Five Highest Wage Bills Among Clubs In The Premier League

After previously looking at which players in the Premier League are currently earning the highest salary, this week we have decided to look at the overall wage bills of clubs in the top flight.

For this data, we have used the website Sportrac who estimate the salaries of every club in the Premier League. We have taken the number for this season only.

There are some surprises on the placement of certain clubs on this list, although the names of the top five teams themselves won’t be a shock to anyone.

Press the next page as we go through the five highest wage bills in the Premier League.

5) Liverpool (£93.76m)

The Reds have been extremely smart in the transfer market over the past few years, and it looks as though that also translates to their dealings with players and their contracts.

Having only the fifth-highest wage bill in the Premier League when you are the reigning champions demonstrates they are a very well run business.

4) Arsenal (£117.78m)

Considering the Gunners have failed to qualify for the Champions League since the 2015/16 season, their payroll remains extremely high and, some would say, unsustainable, considering the lack of income from European football.

Mesut Ozil’s contract has been singled out as being one of the biggest mistakes Arsenal have made when offering new deals in recent years.

3) Manchester City (£128.43m)

Although the Citizens have a bottomless pit of money to spend, they are now trying to live within their means, and that is shown by the fact that they do not have the highest wage bill in English football.

Of course, that is not to say they will not hand lucrative contracts to players if they deserve them. Both Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden are expected to sign improved deals in the coming months.

2) Chelsea (£128.51m)

The Blues’ payroll is likely to have been bloated significantly by the additions of six new players to the first-team squad during the last transfer window.

Stars such as Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Thiago Silva, in particular, will be on very high wages commensurate with the transfer fees that were paid for most of them over the summer.

1) Manchester United (£159.64m)

With a wage bill which is 1.7 times larger than Premier League champions Liverpool, the Red Devils are really not getting value for money in terms of what they pay their players.

The Manchester club are currently sitting 14th in the table, having lost three of their opening seven games. United fans will be expecting to see a lot more from their stars who are currently not justifying their pay packets.
