The Worst Managers Of The Premier League Era (Part 2)

Following our first post looking at the worst managers in Premier League history, we are now going to look at a few more coaches who failed to make the grade in the English top flight.

Some of these managers had big reputations, both as players and coaches, but it didn’t stop them from failing in their roles at their respective teams.

There can be extenuating circumstances, such as a lack of squad investment or taking over a team mid-season when the rut has already set in, but they still were unable to turn things around.

Press the next page as we look at four managers who didn’t impress during their stints in the hot seat:

Sammy Lee

The former Liverpool player and assistant manager took over from Sam Allardyce at Bolton in 2007. However, after just one win in eleven games in charge, he was sacked by chairman Phil Gartside.

Despite taking up numerous roles in football since his sacking, Lee has never been appointed manager of any other team. His last role was at Everton before Allardyce was dismissed as manager in 2018.

Tony Adams

Despite being an Arsenal legend, and one of the best defenders of his era, the former England international did not make a successful step up into management.

Adams took over at Portsmouth following Harry Redknapp’s departure from the South coast club in 2008. However, he lasted just 16 games, picking up just ten points in the process.

Billy Davies

The Scot had a good record of managing teams in the Championship, having led Preston to the playoffs before sealing promotion with Derby County in his first season in charge of the Rams.

Unfortunately, his one spell managing in the top flight was an unmitigated disaster. His team picked up just six points in fourteen matches and, after a falling out with the club’s board, he was sacked with his team bottom of the table.

Felix Magath

The German really shouldn’t be on this list. He won two league and cup doubles with Bayern Munich, as well as league title with Wolfsburg in 2009. He was also named Germany’s Manager of the Year on three separate occasions.

However, his one job in English football came at Fulham in 2014, where he won just three of his twelve games in charge as the Cottagers were relegated. He stayed on for the following season in the Championship before being sacked after a winless run of eleven games.
