Three Premier League Players Included In List Of Europe’s Top FIVE Most Valuable Midfielders

CIES Football Observatory published their bi-annual list a couple of weeks ago detailing the highest valued players based on their positions.

After looking at the most valuable forwards in our post last week, we have moved on to looking at the midfielders.

CIES utilise an algorithm that processes eight different variables to calculate transfer value. Contract length, age, career progression, inflation, recent performances, international status as well as the club’s sporting and economic levels are all taken into account.

Press the next page as we count down the top five most valuable midfielders in the top five European leagues.

5) Kai Havertz (Chelsea – €116.5m)

The Blues’ record signing did not have the best of first seasons at the London club but his winning goal in the Champions League final means his initial issues settling into English football have been all but forgotten by fans.

At 22 years of age, Havertz also has the potential to develop his game further in the coming years, and it is not a surprise he has been included in the top five.

4) Mason Mount (Chelsea – €123.6m)

The England international was arguably the Blues’ best player last season, despite the fact that the London club invested heavily in new signings.

Mount’s goal threat and work rate make him a tricky opponent to face, and many are already comparing him to club legend Frank Lampard. Whether he’ll live up to those expectations, we shall see.

3) Pedri (Barcelona – €133.2m)

Despite only being 18 years of age, the Spaniard has already established himself as a regular starter for both club and country. He will likely improve on the four goals and six assists he managed last season in future campaigns for Barca.

Interesting, though, Pedri is not a product of the famed La Masia academy. The midfielder was snapped up from Las Palmas in 2019.

2) Frenkie de Jong (Barcelona – €138.7m)

The Dutchman is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished midfielders in Europe at the age of just 24, but the fact that he also played as a centre-back last campaign demonstrates his all-round footballing ability.

De Jong is likely to spend his best years at Barca, and the €75m they shelled out on him two years ago already looks like money well spent.

1) Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United (€154.3m)

The Portuguese international has been a revelation since arriving in England from Sporting Lisbon just eighteen months ago. 40 goals and 25 assists in only 80 appearances sums up the massive impact he has made.

Fernandes could have moved to Tottenham instead in the summer of 2019, but Spurs’s offer was not deemed good enough. Their loss was certainly United’s gain.
