Top 5 Most Expensive Squads In The Premier League (Based On Official UEFA Figures)

UEFA have published their latest European Club Finance and Investment Landscape Report.

In the document, they detail the total cost to assemble the squads of the top 20 clubs in European football.

9 English teams feature, which includes data up until the end of the 2023 financial year (June 2023).

Press the next page as we look at the top 5 most expensive squads in the Premier League.

5) Arsenal – €890m

The cost of the Gunners’ squad has increased by €124m since 2022.

That is not a complete surprise considering the arrivals of players such as Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior and Jorginho.

Due to their sizeable spending, the London club have actually gone dangerously close to breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

It meant they were forced into loaning David Raya last summer, rather than signing him on a permanent basis.

4) Liverpool – €905m

The cost to assemble the Reds’ current squad has also increased since last year.

However, the difference from 2022 is far less pronounced than Arsenal; going up by just €44m.

Liverpool signed the likes of Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Fabio Carvalho in the 2023 financial year.

When the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch are included in the next figures, the cost of the squad is likely to rise further.

3) Chelsea – €1084m

UEFA say their accounts for the Blues only go up until June 2022, so the cost of the London club’s squad is expected to have changed significantly.

This figure does not take into consideration any additions during the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital era when Chelsea have made some massive purchases.

If their newer signings are taken into account, it would put them much closer to the top two clubs on this list.

As it is, they are over €200m below the squad value of the second-place team.

2) Manchester City – €1286m

The Premier League champions have assembled a squad that is worth only €14m more than 2022.

Even so, UEFA say it is still the third most expensively assembled team in the history of football.

The likes of Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips and Manuel Akanji were all brought in before the start of last campaign.

They haven’t come up against problems with FFP recently, though, as they have raised plenty of funds through player sales.

1) Manchester United – €1422m

UEFA have officially confirmed that United’s 2023 squad is the most expensively assembled of all time.

It surpasses the previous record held by Real Madrid in 2020 when the La Liga side’s squad was worth €1322m.

These figures don’t even include the purchases of Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount or Andre Onana.

That really puts into perspective how much United have spent with very little return on their investment.
