Top FIVE Biggest Profits Premier League Clubs Have Made On Selling Players

Having a good scouting network, as well as a team of smart transfer negotiators, can really help a club make significant profits in the transfer market.

Premier League sides have not always been the smartest when it comes to recruitment but, over the last ten to twenty years, they have developed into savvy operators.

Picking up promising talent before their potential is realised and then offloading them on for huge profits has served quite a few teams well. Others, however, have simply lost their best players to rivals with deeper pockets.

Press the next page as we count down the biggest profits that English clubs have made on selling players (based on data from Transfermarkt).

5) Leicester – Harry Maguire – £65.97m

The Foxes snapped up the centre-back from Hull City for close to £12m in the summer of 2017 and they sold him to United for a fee almost seven times that a couple of years later.

Considering Maguire’s form struggles over the past twelve months, it’s fair to say that Leicester got the much better end of the deal.

4) Manchester United – Cristiano Ronaldo – £67.5m

The Red Devils beat off a lot of competition for a certain Portuguese teenager’s signature all the way back in 2003 and they sold him on for a large profit six years later.

United would have loved to have kept hold of Ronaldo, considering his exploits for Real Madrid. The forward may now have returned to Old Trafford but he is way past his peak.

3) Chelsea – Eden Hazard – £72m

The Belgian spent seven years with Chelsea, but the winger had always expressed a strong desire to play for Real Madrid. That dream came true in 2019.

Hazard’s subsequent fitness problems at the Bernabeu mean the Blues would have been glad to receive the fee they did for him, despite being reluctant to let him leave at the time.

2) Tottenham – Gareth Bale – £77.67m

Spurs signed a young left-back from Southampton for approximately £13m in 2007 but, initially, he struggled to make an impact. After transforming himself into a pacey winger, Bale’s fortunes changed dramatically.

He lit up the Premier League in the early 2010s, leading to a blockbuster switch to Real Madrid in 2013. While Spurs wasted the millions from the Welshman’s sale, the winger went on to help his new team win 4 Champions Leagues in five years, including a memorable double against Liverpool back in the 2018 final.

1) Liverpool – Philippe Coutinho – £109.8m

The Brazilian magician was picked up from Inter Milan for a pretty modest fee back in the 2013 January transfer window, but he flourished into one of the world’s top attacking midfielders.

Barcelona were prepared to pay an eyewatering amount for Coutinho in 2018 but, unfortunately, he did not reproduce his Liverpool form at the Camp Nou.
