Top Five Most Influential Captains Of The Premier League Era

There have been some memorable captains in the Premier League era over the past 28 years, with some having gone on to lift multiple league titles.

Of course, City have had one or two standout leaders themselves but we will be looking right across all the clubs who have played in the top flight over the past few decades for our choices.

All of those that we will consider have left lasting legacies at their clubs and have made telling contributions during their time as players.

Press the “next page” as we look at the five most influential captains that have played since the Premier League’s inception in 1992.

Roy Keane

Seven Premier League titles kind of says it all about the Irishman. He was an uncompromising captain who was a reflection of his manager Alex Ferguson.

His influence on the Red Devils, and on the Premier League in general, cannot be denied and he will certainly go down as one of the best leaders to grace English football.

Steven Gerrard

The Liverpool legend may have not won a league title but he captained the Reds for over 11 years, whilst winning ten major trophies in the process.

He was ever-present for one of England’s most prestigious clubs during the Premier League era, and while some will remember him for the slip against Chelsea in 2014, others will recognise his ability to lead by example on the pitch.

John Terry

The former Chelsea captain is one of only three defenders to win the PFA Player of the Year since 1992, and his leadership helped his side to five Premier League trophies over a thirteen-year period.

Terry was a regular starter for the majority of his time with the London club despite the money that was poured into the Blues by owner Roman Abramovich.

Vincent Kompany

The Belgian international was initially employed as a holding midfielder by manager Mark Hughes, but under successive managers, he forged his reputation as a rock-solid centre-half.

Kompany went on to lead the team to an astonishing run of success, winning the Premier League during his first season as captain and on three further occasions.

Tony Adams

Much like Keane, the former Arsenal talisman was an old-fashioned leader, but he learned to adapt his game under the visionary head coach Arsene Wenger.

After becoming captain at the age of just 21, and winning two old First Division titles, during the Premier League era he added two further titles, as well as six other trophies before retiring in 2002.
