Top Five Right Wingers Of The Premier League Era

Last week, we went through our five best central midfielders in Premier League history, and today it is the turn of the wingers. Specifically, those who would generally play from the right-hand side.

These days, traditional wingers are rare, so we have decided to also select those who now operate as inside forwards or on the right-hand side of a three-man attack.

There were certainly a number of players who narrowly missed out on the top five, but we are satisfied with the players we have selected for this one.

Press the next page as we count down the five best right-wingers of the Premier League era.

5) Arjen Robben

The Dutchman may have only spent three seasons in English football, but he played an integral role in Chelsea winning their first two league titles under Jose Mourinho.

Brought in from PSV, Robben’s ability to cut in and shoot on his stronger left foot from the right-hand side was his signature move. During his first season in England, he scored nine goals and provided ten assists. He scored seven goals in his second campaign before struggling with his fitness in his third season.

4) Raheem Sterling

The Manchester City star has played more often than not as a left-winger under the guidance of Pep Guardiola over the past eighteen months but the majority of his career has been played from the right.

After making his breakthrough at Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers, his £49m switch to the Citizens in 2015 saw him push on to another level. In the last three seasons, he has become one of the best players in the world.

3) David Beckham

The former Manchester United winger probably had the best delivery of any player in the Premier League era. Although a falling out with Alex Ferguson ended his time at Old Trafford prematurely, he had still collected a vast array of winners medals before his departure for Real Madrid in 2003.

Beckham won six league titles, one FA Cup and a Champions League during his time with United. His 62 goals and 67 assists in 264 appearances also makes for impressive reading.

2) Mohamed Salah

The Egyptian international is generally recognised as a forward these days, but he still plays wide on the right for Liverpool. His impact since arriving from Roma in 2017 has been quite remarkable.

Salah has won two golden boots over the past three seasons, racking up 72 goals in just 113 league games, which gives him a strike rate of a goal every 1.56 matches.

1) Cristiano Ronaldo

Again, he may be seen as a striker these days but the Portuguese international’s early years at Manchester United were ostensibly as a right-winger. His place on top of his list cannot really be disputed.

Ronaldo scored 118 goals and provided 68 assists in 292 appearances for the Red Devils. In the 2007/08 season alone, he scored 41 goals in only 49 games.
