TOP SIX COMPARED: City’s Squad On The Opening Day Cost 377M More Than Liverpool’s And 605M More Than Arsenal’s

Spending power is a massive factor in terms of building a successful team in modern football. Managers do have an impact and can help their teams overachieve in the right circumstances.

However, winning trophies in the Premier League is generally dependent on how much the club is willing to spend in the transfer market.

The traditional ‘Big Six’ tend to finish in the top six places for a reason. Their squads are the most expensively assembled in the top flight.

Press the next page as we rank the cost of the matchday squads that the top six fielded in their opening day fixtures last weekend.

6) Arsenal – £265.5m

It must be pointed out that the absence of Thomas Partey, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Gabriel from the squad against Brentford has cut £170m from their valuation.

Even so, it would only have moved the Gunners up to fifth on this list, and still a long way behind their other top-six rivals in terms of the cost of their squad.

5) Tottenham – £306.8m

Again, like Arsenal, with Tanguy Ndombele and Ryan Sessegnon not involved against Manchester City, it would have added another £90m to Spurs’s squad value if the two players were fit.

Saying that, though, it still leaves Spurs quite a distance behind in terms of investment compared to the likes of City, United and Chelsea.

4) Liverpool – £494m

The Reds are clearly punching above their weight when it comes to transfer spending and the success they have been having both domestically and in Europe over recent years.

Even if we included players such as Thiago, Jordan Henderson and Andy Robertson, who weren’t available for the win over Norwich, it would only add an additional £50m to the squad’s overall value.

3) Chelsea – £510.8m

Chelsea’s team cost over half a billion pounds even without Romelu Lukaku, N’Golo Kante and Hakim Ziyech in the squad against Crystal Palace on Saturday. The trio were bought for a combined £161.5m.

The Blues would move up to second in terms of Premier League squad cost if those three players were fit and available for the comfortable win over the Eagles.

2) Manchester United – £659.5m

The £73m addition of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund has increased the value of what was already an expensively assembled team. Matchday squads could well hit the £700m mark when Raphael Varane and Eric Bailly are back to full fitness.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer really has very few excuses in terms of mounting a title challenge. He has been backed in the transfer market and he needs to prove he is capable of winning trophies.

1) Manchester City – £870.9m

With the signing of Jack Grealish, Pep Guardiola’s matchday squad against Spurs became the most expensive in Premier League history, and if Harry Kane does join from Tottenham before the transfer window closes, it could break the £1billion barrier.

Some have argued that City have simply spent their way to the top, and while there is definitely some truth in that, having managers like Guardiola, who can create formidable teams from a group of expensive players, is just as important to their success.
