TOP FIVE Defenders Who Will Become Free Agents At The End Of June

Sergio Ramos

This is our third and final post looking at the players who will leave their clubs when their contracts expire on June 30th.

We have gone through the top five midfielders and top five strikers who are set to become available on a free in previous articles. Today, we will focus on the defenders.

There are some high-profile names on this list and you would back most, if not all, of them to find a new team relatively quickly.

Press the next page as we look at the defenders who are set to become free agents.

1) Sergio Ramos – Paris Saint-Germain

After two seasons with PSG, the legendary Spanish centre-back has decided to leave France.

Ramos spent most of his first campaign with the Ligue One champions on the sidelines due to a troublesome calf injury.

However, he was a regular starter last season, helping his team win the league title once again, as well as securing the French Super Cup.

There has been speculation that Ramos could move to the United States or Saudi Arabia but he is said to be interested in returning to Spain, with his former club Sevilla reportedly his preferred destination.

2) Yerry Mina – Everton

The Colombian international has decided to leave Goodison Park after five years with the Toffees.

Like Ramos, Mina has had his fitness issues during his time on Merseyside, having missed 64 games due to injuries. He is, however, still only 28 years of age and many clubs are looking to snap him up.

Moves to Turkey, Spain and France have been suggested but there is a chance that the centre-back will stay in England.

The latest rumour to emerge is that Fulham may try to sign Mina. We shall have to wait and see if the defender does make the switch to Craven Cottage.

3) Joel Veltman – Brighton

The Dutchman started 25 times for the Seagulls in the Premier League last season, as Roberto De Zerbi’s side finished sixth in the table.

It is, therefore, somewhat surprising to see that Veltman could well leave the Amex when his current deal ends on June 30th.

There were reports back in May that progress was being made over a possible extension but things have gone pretty quiet on that front.

Considering how well Veltman has played for Brighton over the last few years, there will be plenty of teams keen to pick up the Netherlands international on a free transfer.

4) Axel Tuanzebe – Manchester United

It’s been a difficult few years for the centre-back, with injuries and a lack of game time leading to United’s decision to release him.

Tuanzebe’s 2022/23 campaign was very disappointing. He did not make a single appearance for United up until January due to a back problem.

It was then decided that he should be loaned out to gain fitness but he only played five matches during a spell at Stoke City in the Championship.

Getting his career back on track will be the goal for Tuanzebe’s next move. He is only 25 and could still have the best years ahead of him.

5) Daniel Amartey – Leicester City

The Ghanaian won the Premier League title with Leicester in 2016 but, after seven years at the Foxes, he will be leaving the King Power Stadium.

Amartey is a very experienced player, despite still being just 28 years of age, and he is capable of playing in a number of positions, including centre-half, right-back and central midfield.

Celtic have been mentioned as a potential destination for Amartey, where he would link up with former Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers.

However, if he doesn’t move to Glasgow, the defender will likely find another team in England or on the continent soon enough.
