Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are all keeping tabs on Matthijs de Ligt‘s situation at Juventus, according to reports in the Italian media.

The Netherlands international currently has a €125m (£108m) release clause in his contract, which is set to rise to €140m (£121m). However, the player’s contract expires in 2024 and, in talks about renewing his current deal, he has asked for the buyout fee to be lowered to between €70m (£61m) and €80m (£69m).

Unsurprisingly, Juve are unwilling to give into de Ligt’s demands. It means the Serie A club have a dilemma on their hands. They can keep the defender, knowing his value will likely depreciate well below the requested release clause next year, they can agree to the new terms or they could sell for a bigger fee this summer.

While the likes of Chelsea and United, in particular, are very much in need of reinforcements at the back, City are certainly not in the same situation. However, it is believed that Nathan Ake would be sold if a good enough offer is made in the coming weeks, so de Ligt could then be an option if his fellow Dutchman departs.
