Manchester City are monitoring Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala’s contract situation, according to The Sun.

The German international has just over two years left on his current deal at the Allianz Arena but negotiations over an extension worth £150,000 a week have been slow.

City are believed to have sent scouts to watch Musiala in action during Bayern’s 3-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last month. He may have not impressed in that game but his form in general for the reigning Bundesliga champions has been excellent.

This season, the 21-year-old has scored 9 goals and contributed 4 assists in 28 appearances for Bayern.

City will have rivals for Musiala

The Sun report that Pep Guardiola’s side have been joined by Chelsea in “keeping tabs” on the player. Musiala was in the Blues’ academy for 7 years before returning to his homeland.

Considering the London club’s lowly position in the Premier League table, it is highly unlikely that the German would choose a move back to Stamford Bridge over joining City.

Musiala is said to be keen on playing in the Premier League but a lot still depends on the progress of contract talks with Bayern.

The midfielder is very highly rated

Speaking after Bayern Munich’s 3-1 win over Galatasaray in the Champions League back in October, former England international and TNT Sports pundit Michael Owen was effusive in his praise of Musiala:

“I think he’s exceptional. Really exceptional. It’s such a shame he chose Germany over England when he was picking his national team. I thought he was brilliant in the last major tournament.”

As Owen says, Musiala could have played for the Three Lions at senior level (having played for England’s Under 17s and Under 21s) but he eventually decided to play for the country of his birth. He now has 25 caps for Germany, scoring 2 goals.
