Ferdinand Believes City Star Is The “Standout Defender” In The Premier League After Superb Start

BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand has said that Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker is currently the most in-form defender in the Premier League.

The 30-year-old scored the winner against Sheffield United yesterday and Ferdinand believes the England international is at the top of his game following an excellent start to the season:

“I think he’s been the standout defender in the league so far. I think the way in which he attacks the games, he’s got determination he drives at the games. He’s never playing in first gear just chilling. Everything is done at high-tempo, it must be a nightmare to play against but also defensively he’s been very sound.”

With Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk injured, Manchester United having struggled defensively and Chelsea only just beginning to settle on a regular back four with Thiago Silva in the team, Walker is certainly playing a few levels above other defenders in the league at the moment.

Arsenal fans have been hailing the impact of Gabriel Magalhaes since his arrival from Lille in the summer but Walker is demonstrating that he has a lot more to his game, being both solid defensively and providing a major threat in the final third of the pitch. It remains to be seen, though, whether he can maintain this level of performance for the rest of the campaign.
