Alan Shearer Praises City Duo As He Names Them Alongside Arsenal And Chelsea Stars In His PL Team Of The Week

BBC pundit Alan Shearer has included Manchester City pair Kevin De Bruyne and Josko Gvardiol in his official Premier League Team of the Week.

Shearer said that De Bruyne was the “best player on the pitch” as Pep Guardiola‘s side secured a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest at the weekend. He has also reserved special praise for Gvardiol who opened the scoring at the City Ground:

“Scored the opener and had an impressive display at both ends of the pitch, including a crucial goalline clearance that kept Man City ahead.”

De Bruyne and Gvardiol played key roles in helping their team maintain momentum in the title race. With four fixtures remaining, the Cityzens are one point behind Arsenal with a game in hand.

It was a tough game for City against Forest

Guardiola admitted after the match on Sunday that his team were “lucky” to secure the three points. Their opponents were right in the game before Erling Haaland scored the second goal for the away side.

The xG figures do back up Guardiola’s comments as well. Forest racked up 2.17 xG, while City ended with 0.93. On another day, the reigning champions could well have lost the match.

Who else made it into Shearer’s Team of the Week?

Burnley’s Arijanet Muric was selected in goal by Shearer, after the former City keeper made a number of important saves during the Clarets’ 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

Gvardiol is joined in defence by Everton’s James Tarkowski and Bournemouth’s Dango Ouattara with Shearer opting for a three-man backline.

In midfield, Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka, Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and Everton’s Idrissa Gueye were included alongside De Bruyne.

Up front, Shearer went with West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen, (who scored and provided an assist in the draw versus Liverpool), Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Arsenal’s Kai Havertz.
